At the elementary level, I've tried literary "cafes" at school, family literacy nights, readings at the pratt museum amphitheater... hmmm,is this what you meant?

Yes and no. I love the ideas you mention (I may steal some!), but what I struggle with is the audience for academic/literary analysis essays/persuasive research based essays. The hunt continues.

Possible Audiences:
Academic Literary Analysis
a)Author - if living
b)Shelfari
c)College student
d)exchange (I'll share a form with you on this one tomorrow - remind me)

Persuasive Essays
a)I ask who could make this happen and write the paper for them (if change in policy, problem/solution, etc.)
b)A class of peers
c)Younger crew of students

Okay... got ya'. What about tracking some local issues in town, preparing persuasive essays or critical analysis pieces and presenting them to.... City Council members, Islands and Ocean biologists,... not necessarily with a huge outcome in mind, but with the idea of communicating ideas to the professional and local community.
